"Setting Sun - Sapelo Island, GA"
12" x 16"
Plein Air Oil on Canvas
copyright by Artist, Brenda Hofreiter
This painting was completed on location at Sapelo Island, GA during my recent Artist's Residency there.
It depicts an old grass runway on the island that R. J. Renolds used when he flew in to visit his mansion on the island. The cabbage palms are starting to take over the runway, and you can see a few of them in this painting. I was on my way back from painting on the North End of the island and saw this scene. I pulled over in my loaner truck, ( I fondly called it "The Gray Turtle") and set up painting in the back. It is last light, just before sunset. I had to race the sun to complete this painting. The sky was already beginning to show its sunset colors. You can see the grasses lit up in the last golden light. My brushes were flying to complete the painting before dark. The moisture of the day is beginning to settle and you can see it in the distant trees. Tomorrow morning promises to be foggy.
While I was painting, one of the island residents stopped by and snapped pictures of me painting. Then she went home and burned them to a CD for me so I could have the pictures!! Wasn't that thoughtful of her? Here is one of them:
