This is a painting of the Edisto River Canoe Launch at Givens Ferry State Park in South Carolina. It is the painting that was chosen by the park during my residency for their permanent collection. It shows the sandy beach landing along the Edisto River that is a favorite for canoe and kayakers along the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail. Due to the kindness of a park volunteer, I was able to take a canoe ride up and down the Edisto River during my residency. It is truly beautiful. You can read more about this trail and it's history here: http://www.dnr.sc.gov/water/envaff/river/wsedisto.html
While I was painting this scene a group of about 20 kayakers pulled up on shore for a break. I had to take a break too since the entire beach area and beyond were covered in kayaks! It is the view most seen by park visitors and is also a favorite swimming hole and fishing spot for the locals. This painting captures the feel of the blackwater river lapping up on the shore, it's reflections and overhanging trees. You can feel the cool of the morning mist on the far shore. Makes me want to go back!
