This painting was created on location at Cabretta on Sapelo Island, GA during
a two week Artist Residency I completed there. The weather had cleared and the roads dried up enough for me to travel with my trusty 4 wheel drive truck ("The Gray Turtle") up to the north end of the island. This view of Cabretta was near the primitive camping area. You can see the tidal marsh and a view of the deadwood piled up along the edge of the white beach sand in the distance. I spend a lovely morning capturing this scene. I chose it because it seemed to capture both the marsh and the beach. It contained that feeling of endless space and peace that makes me feel like I can breathe. I love the way the marsh grasses change color in the moving sunlight. Their tops are a lovely golden color in the strong costal light and their roots are a dusty gray-green. Different colors and types of vegetation meander in and out of the marsh and lead you into and around the beach. The tidal water snakes around and rises and falls with the tides. There is such an appealing rhythm to that. It's almost like the earth breathes in and out. Can you tell I'm a sucker for a tidal marsh?
